Chapter 12

Harper

* * *

All the next day, with a few breaks, Aimee and Harper worked together and then just Harper as she weeded through the accounting. Aimee still set it up, using an old way of doing things. Part old school, part “make it up as you go” but still easily decipherable. The quaint symbol for debits and credits was a minus or plus sign in front of a dollar symbol. While the guests wanted antiquity and quaintness in their B&B, Harper didn’t want it in the bookkeeping.

The minus and plus signs kind of made sense, but since people often misunderstood debits and credits a lot, she wasn’t sure this wasn’t another confused code created long ago. It stumped Harper for a few moments and then, before she could ask, Aimee said, “You know, money out, money in.”

“Yes, but there are other credits and debits. Those credits with your assets, things you sell in your little country store, and those you get from guests staying. How do you tell where everything comes from and goes to?”

“Really? Huh, well, if you can’t tell, just ask me. I’ll remember. I practically sleep with those damn books.”

“Not anymore. I’ve got them now and with just some tweaking and entering everything on my program, I think we will have you computerized and modern in no time. The accounting, anyway,” laughed Harper as she looked around the late 1880s room.

“Hey, that’s part of the charm.” Amelia’s hands went to her waist.

“I like history, but fringed lamp shades are not my thing, and what looks like petticoats on the windows are a bit much.”

“But the brocade, the silk, the wood, and leather are all so comforting,” Aimee reasoned.

“If you say so. I like leather and some wood, but brocade and silk for decoration? No thanks. Silk might work on a dress for some people, but I don’t know anyone who uses brocade except in upholstery for Victorian places like this home.” Aimee frowned at Harper, who clarified. “But in here, it creates the ambiance.”

“It does and I love it. And so do hundreds of guests,” defended Amelia.

“Well then, who am I to disagree? Openly that is.”

“You just need to understand the history of Wyoming and the surrounding area.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. Now, look at this block of entries. I have a few questions.”

That evening, after dinner, Harper was learning all the interesting things about Wyoming, specifically Buffalo. The tales of the wild west were fascinating, especially the way that Aimee told them. Harper hadn’t known her friend’s hidden talent for putting you in the place and time of her story. She could listen to Aimee for hours. It helped that Harper was an American history buff, but even the most stalwart of guests would fall into the world Aimee created.

Just as Aimee finished the story she was regaling; her cell phone rang.

Amelia checked the caller ID. “Hello, Wilder.” Aimee listened intently for a few moments and then passed her phone to Harper.

“Hello?” Harper’s heart pumped
